Yates Mill

My interest in photography goes towards nature photography and from that into travel. I enjoy seeing new places and try to use my photography to capture the beauty so that I might share it with others. Sometimes you don't have to travel far. It's right there in your own back yard.

Yates Mill has served Raleigh for 200 years. There were once 70 grist mills in Wake County. Yates Mill is the only one still in operation.

Last operated commercially in the 1950s the mill was almost destroyed in 1996 when flooding caused by Hurricane Fran breached the dam. The dam was rebuilt with a poured concrete core faced with stonework from the original 18th Century construction.

Today the mill is seen in its mid-19th century configuration and is operated for historic demonstrations. The mill pond is the centerpiece of a 174 acre park dedicated to nature preservation and eco-education.

Yates Mill is located at:

4620 Lake Wheeler Road
Raleigh, NC 27603

Open 7 days per week, 8 am to sunset.
